Google has increased its investment in the generative artificial intelligence company, Anthropic, from its initial 10% stake for $300 million, to $2b to be spread over a period.
While the investment details are yet to be revealed, Google’s investment strategy involves an initial $500 million injection, followed by an additional $1.5 billion commitment over time.
Google’s recent decision comes amidst the meteoric rise in Anthropic’s valuation, largely due to the generative AI sector’s burgeoning growth and increased fear of missing out by other tech companies. Amazon recently invested $1.25 billion in Anthropic for a minority stake, with the possibility of increasing the investment to $4 billion.
Previously, following the initial $300 million investment, Anthropic had expressed its intent to leverage Google Cloud as its preferred platform. This strategic choice, however, could be challenged following Amazon’s announcement. Amazon and Anthropic pledged to collaborate on the development of future Trainium and Inferentia chips.
The intensifying competition and strategic investments by tech giants like Google and Amazon highlight the significance of the generative AI landscape. These moves not only showcase the evolving market dynamics but also underline the growing emphasis on AI-driven technologies and their role in shaping the future of computing.
Anthropic was founded by former OpenAI executives and is well-known for building so-called generative AI, systems that can draft content as good as humans. if a human created it.
