In a transaction that reflects the changing landscape of internet infrastructure, Akamai and Lumen announced a transaction recently that saw Lumen sell ‘select Content Delivery Network service contracts’ to Akamai. The deal enables Akamai to consolidate more revenue onto its platform and allows Lumen to refocus further on connectivity.
While the terms of the deal have not been disclosed. Lumen and Akamai will operate under a transition services agreement for 90 days, after which Lumen plans to wind down its content delivery services.
According to Bob McCarthy, Lumen SVP of Business Development, the decision to sell select Lumen CDN service contracts is part of Lumen’s ongoing business transformation and simplification efforts. Lumen plans to focus on disrupting the telecommunications industry with its Quantum Fiber offering and bringing new solutions to the market. Lumen’s CDN network had more than 2,400 Edge servers in 95 Points of Presence (PoPs) across 40 countries, offering a total delivery capacity of 170 Tbps.
For Akamai, Lumen’s assets and select content delivery customer contracts, is expected to add approximately $40-50 million in revenue for Akamai.
The deal with Akamai marks the second recent acquisition of CDN customers by Akamai. In August, Akamai acquired around 100 CDN customers from Stackpath as Stackpath announced the discontinuation of its CDN services. Akamai estimated that the Stackpath deal would add approximately $20 million in revenue by 2024.
