Airtel Africa, through its wholesale fiber unit Telesonic, has signed a major partnership with Nokia to deploy a high-capacity terrestrial fiber network spanning East and Central Africa. Announced at AfricaCom in Cape Town, the project will strengthen cross-border connectivity by linking key submarine cables—including the 2Africa system—to an expansive land-based network. Using Nokia’s 1830 Photonic Service Switch and advanced coherent PSE technology, the Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) system will deliver up to 38Tbps, improving speed, security, and bandwidth for cloud services, webscale traffic, and a rapidly growing mobile-first population.

The fiber deployment will cover 139 nodes across several countries, supporting landlocked regions and boosting access to international bandwidth. Airtel Africa says the initiative is central to its broader digital infrastructure strategy and aligns with rising bandwidth demand across the continent. With mobile data traffic in Sub-Saharan Africa projected to surge by 2030, the new network is expected to accelerate economic growth, enable new digital services, and expand Airtel Africa’s evolving business portfolio, which increasingly includes data centers and digital advertising.
