Airtel Africa, Vodacom sign infrastructure-sharing deal to boost connectivity.

Airtel Africa and Vodacom Group have agreed to share fibre and tower infrastructure in markets including Mozambique, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, pending regulatory approval, in a bid to expand high-speed internet access and bridge Africa’s digital divide. The collaboration will leverage existing assets to accelerate service rollout, improve network coverage, and lower costs, particularly in underserved areas.

“Providing connectivity to empower people is at the core of our strategy,” said Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub. “Through infrastructure sharing, we can provide cost-effective services to more people, more rapidly, ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital age.”

Airtel Africa CEO Sunil Taldar called the partnership “a business imperative,” noting that even as competitors, both operators must collaborate to build resilient, high-capacity networks to support 4G, 5G, and emerging digital services. “Accelerating fibre deployment is key to enabling the high-speed, low-latency connections modern applications require,” he said.
