Bayobab Group has landed its 45,000km 2Africa cable in Nigeria, marking the fourth in a series of six landings from the 2Africa subsea cable system. The company previously announced its cable landing on Ghanaian shores in November 2023.
In his comments, Frédéric Schepens, CEO of Bayobab highlighted the importance of the subsea cables in supporting a healthy internet ecosystem development by facilitating greatly improved internet accessibility for businesses across all sectors and customers, “Following two milestone landings in South Africa, we are pleased to announce 2Africa cable landing further up the continent, in Accra, Ghana and Lagos, Nigeria. The 2Africa initiative is at the core of the work we do as Bayobab, with the ultimate goal of connecting Africa to the world and the world to Africa. We are eager to continue offering services that will expand the rapidly growing African digital economy and positively impact growth across the continent.”
Bayobab’s statement highlighted Nigeria and Ghana as key growth areas for West Africa’s digital economy. Ghana was highlighted as a “strategic market and hub” for bordering countries Togo, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso, and its strategic importance is now increased with its six subsea cables: South Atlantic Telecommunications cable 3 (SAT-3), MainOne Cable System, West Africa Cable System (WACS), Glo-1, Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) and now 2Africa, with a combined capacity of over 200 TBPS.
2Africa is a consortium of companies including Bayobab, Meta, China Mobile International, Orange, stc, Telecom Egypt, center3, Vodafone Group, and WIOCC. Its planned landing points include Lagos and Qua Iboe in Nigeria, and Accra, in Ghana, and it is expected to deliver up to 180 TBPS.
