Estelle Akofio‑Sowah, West Africa Regional Director at CSquared and former Country Manager for Google Ghana, has been officially sworn in as Chairperson of the Board of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), marking a pivotal moment in Ghana’s digital governance journey.
Her appointment comes as NITA undergoes a strategic transformation from a dual-role entity, functioning both as an ICT infrastructure provider and regulator, into a fully independent regulatory body. This restructuring is widely seen as essential for enabling a more open, competitive, and innovation-driven digital ecosystem in Ghana.
The inauguration ceremony was presided over by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George. In her remarks, Akofio‑Sowah pledged: “We are committed to leading with integrity and purpose to deliver the required results. Ghana’s digital future depends on strong, transparent institutions, and this board will work to uphold that standard.”
A veteran of Africa’s internet ecosystem, Akofio‑Sowah is renowned for her role in expanding broadband access and championing open-access infrastructure across West Africa. She served as Managing Director of BusyInternet – Ghana’s pioneering ISP and business incubator – and as President of the Ghana Internet Service Providers Association. At Google, she led the company’s operations in Ghana as Country Manager, helping shape the early landscape of internet adoption in the country.
She is currently a board member at Stanbic Bank and the Databank Group, both in Ghana.
Akofio‑Sowah is a graduate of Ghana International School and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Development Studies from the University of Sussex, UK. Today, she leads CSquared’s infrastructure efforts across Ghana, Liberia, and Togo, further cementing her legacy as a key architect of Africa’s connected future.
