IBM launches $500m AI venture fund

IBM is leaping into AI with its IBM Enterprise AI Venture Fund, of an impressive US$500 million. This venture fund is specifically designed to invest in a diverse array of AI companies, ranging from fledgling early-stage startups to rapidly expanding entities, with a particular focus on accelerating generative AI technology and research geared towards enterprise applications.

The primary goal of the IBM Enterprise AI Venture Fund is to invest in the current and future front-runners in AI, helping to empower businesses globally to realize the vast potential that AI holds for their operations

Each startup that receives funding through this initiative will gain more than just financial investment. They will also be afforded the opportunity to cultivate significant partnerships with IBM. Additionally, these startups will have access to IBM’s wealth of operational expertise in areas such as product development, engineering, and strategies for market penetration.

Rob Thomas, Senior Vice President for Software and Chief Commercial Officer at IBM, highlighted the incredible productivity potential AI holds. With an anticipated $16 trillion in productivity expected to be unlocked by AI by 2030, Thomas emphasized that the launch of the IBM Enterprise AI Venture Fund will provide another avenue to harness AI’s colossal potential, ensuring concrete, positive outcomes both for IBM and the invested companies.

Moreover, Thomas underscored that this fund represents another facet of IBM’s fortified commitment to responsible AI innovation, aligned with the company’s broader effort, watsonx, to support organizations in leveraging this transformative technology effectively.

IBM has already demonstrated its commitment to advancing AI in the business landscape through recent investments in AI technology and various AI-driven companies. For instance, the company revealed its involvement in the $235 million Series D funding round for Hugging Face, an open-source collaborative platform aimed at fostering the machine learning community and advancing the future landscape of AI.
