The Federal Government, led by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has finalized plans for an extensive strategy to achieve affordable internet and enhanced broadband services across the country. The initiative, known as the National Broadband Alliance for Nigeria (NBAN), aims to address challenges in underserved and unserved rural communities, including those affected by security issues in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states, along with approximately 300 communities nationwide.
Recognizing challenges such as multiple taxation, access to foreign exchange, and Right of Way (RoW) issues, the Minister has approved the launch of the NBAN initiative, focusing initially on specific states, including Edo, Ogun, Kwara, Katsina, Imo, Abia, Borno, and Nasarawa.
Some of these states, such as Katsina, Kwara, and Edo, already have zero charges for RoW, facilitating the installation of crucial infrastructure like fiber optic cables. The NBAN initiative proposes a multi-stakeholder approach to telecom infrastructure development, aiming for unprecedented benefits in terms of speed, reliability, and future scaling of internet and broadband services.
The NBAN will commence its pilot program in the selected states before the end of Q1 2024, based on their current broadband investments and successful management of fiber optic challenges, including the waiver of RoW fees. This initiative reflects a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors, as well as civil society, to develop a sustainable business model for driving internet adoption in key public institutions and promoting digital inclusion.
To address the challenges of low and non-consumption of nationwide fiber networks, the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy has initiated the NBAN to foster collaboration for broadband development and adoption. The alliance will serve as a platform for various stakeholders to coordinate efforts, streamline processes, and remove obstacles hindering the swift deployment of broadband networks. The NBAN will also drive digital inclusion and awareness, ensuring that all segments of society benefit from broadband connectivity.
The pilot initiative, starting in the selected states, is set to kick off before the end of Q1 2024, aligning with the goals of the National Broadband Plan and reflecting a phased approach with short-term, medium-term, and long-term objectives. The NBAN’s collaboration with international partners and organizations is expected to leverage expertise and resources for accelerated implementation.
