iColo: A Digital Realty Company has announced a major expansion in renewable energy with the installation of solar panels at its Nairobi and Mombasa facilities. The data center operator has added over 650 kilowatts (kW) of solar capacity, making it a leader in green connectivity within Kenya.
Of the new capacity, 450 kW is located at iColo’s NBO campus, which supports the hub’s expansion and services over 60 national and global networks. The remaining 200 kW will be utilized at the Miritini Mombasa campus, which serves more than 85 network providers.
Ranjith Cherickel, Founder and CEO of iColo, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability and customer support. “Our solar investments are driven not only by our sustainability goals as a company but also by our commitment to support our customers’ renewable energy targets. As we further expand, Mombasa’s leading global interconnection hub that has more than 85 network providers will benefit from the campus’ expanded sustainable energy source,” said Cherickel.
Cherickel stated “In harnessing Kenya’s renewable energy landscape, we’re proud to lead the charge towards a sustainable future. We will continue to invest in renewable energy to keep up with our power consumption for the foreseeable future. We’re not just embracing renewable energy; we’re driving it forward.”
Kenya’s power grid, with 82% renewable energy from sources like geothermal and wind, aligns with iColo’s sustainability goals. The company plans further solar expansions and aims to meet future power demands with additional capacity.
iColo’s initiatives align with Digital Realty’s global sustainability commitments, including a pledge to reduce Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions and secure renewable energy contracts. Recent milestones include Teraco’s large-scale solar project in South Africa, further showcasing Digital Realty’s dedication to clean energy.
