OpenAI positions for AI chips, partners Broadcom

OpenAI is actively exploring the development of a new AI server chip, engaging in discussions with chip designers such as Broadcom, as reported by The Information. CEO Sam Altman is at the forefront of these talks, aiming to potentially create hardware that could rival Nvidia’s offerings. However, any tangible product is still in its early stages, with challenges anticipated, particularly in navigating OpenAI’s current supplier relationship with Nvidia.

The discussions indicate a strategic shift towards in-house chip development, a move underscored by OpenAI’s recent hiring of Richard Ho, former lead in chip engineering at Lightmatter and Google TPU. Broadcom’s involvement, known for its role in Google’s TPU AI chip development, suggests a significant player in potential collaborations.

The initiative aligns with OpenAI’s broader strategy, as revealed in recent job postings seeking a team to co-design future hardware for enhanced programmability and performance. This move signals a departure from solely relying on third-party hardware solutions, potentially marking a pivotal moment in OpenAI’s technological roadmap.

Altman’s proactive stance on advancing OpenAI’s hardware capabilities has been evident since his return to the company in late 2023, following his brief departure. Reports indicate he has been exploring various avenues, including seeking substantial investments, possibly from Middle Eastern investors, to fund an ambitious AI chip venture codenamed project ‘Tigris.’

These developments underscore the company’s ambition to innovate in AI hardware, positioning itself strategically amidst a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
