Subsea Cloud announces rolling trials for underwater data storage

Underwater data center company, Subsea Cloud (SSC) has unveiled its ‘Project OTTO’ –– a rolling trial that offers its clients the opportunity to evaluate the company’s solution before making further commitments. Over the last three years, the company has conducted one-on-one trials with clients across sectors such as gaming, media, and government but is now adopting a new approach.

“Project OTTO offers a testing platform for companies seeking power and cost reductions, but that remain unfamiliar with the subsea environment,” explained Max Reynolds, the company’s founder and CEO. She says the company is strategically shifting away from individual trials due to their higher costs. “This project is driven by practical and mutual benefits. It eliminates the opportunity costs and the financial burden associated with the previous one-on-one approach for us and our clients,” she notes.

The project will run indefinitely, with participants receiving 30-90 days of testing time in the unit before committing to larger-scale deployments. As the company delivers on its core promises, participants should experience significant benefits, including a 100% reduction in power consumed for cooling, a 100% reduction in water usage, a 40% decrease in carbon emissions, and a 30% reduction in operational costs. “The anticipated value of the project is considerable. It boosts the solution’s overall exposure and enhances transparency for prospective clients that’s frictionless,” Reynolds emphasized.

Additionally, SSC is actively pursuing colocation opportunities with offshore wind farms as part of its sustainability initiatives. Peter Stensgård Hansen, a partner at SSC and a former senior manager at Ørsted, specializes in developing collocated projects. He believes that the company’s emphasis on renewable asset colocation is guided by a pragmatic approach and mutual advantages. “By integrating our operations with wind farms and other renewable energy sources, we overcome challenges related to power transmission attenuation while leveraging existing permits,” says Hansen, adding, “SSC enhances post-subsidy and aging European offshore wind portfolios, and keeps offshore wind relevant throughout the asset lifetime.”

Through Project OTTO, the company has also introduced its ‘i5 Units’ as depicted above.

By placing data centers subsea, SSC says it reduces latency by up to 98% and power consumption and carbon emissions by 40%.
