The United Arab Emirates has announced a $1 billion commitment to build AI infrastructure across Africa, in what officials describe as a major effort to boost access to computing power, technical expertise, and global partnerships.
Speaking at the G20 summit in Johannesburg, UAE Minister of State Saeed Bin Mubarak Al Hajeri said the investment aims to “provide access to AI computing power, technical expertise, and global partnerships.”

According to the Abu Dhabi Media Office, the funding will support AI projects across multiple African markets, though details on rollout timelines and target countries were not disclosed. The initiative will be executed through the Abu Dhabi Exports Office, under the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development. The UAE has rapidly grown into an influential data center investor through domestic operator Khazna and global investment vehicle MGX. The pledge follows a far larger $50bn commitment to AI and energy projects in Canada.
Africa’s data center capacity remains highly concentrated: 41 percent sits in South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria, and the region still records the world’s lowest data-center power consumption per capita, according to the IEA.
