MTN Benin has officially launched the country’s first commercial 5G network, marking a significant milestone in the region’s technological advancement. Initially, the 5G service is available in the cities of Cotonou and Abomey-Calavi, setting MTN apart from its domestic rivals, Moov Africa Benin and Celtiis, both of which are still in the trial phase for 5G technology.

“We are honored to bring 5G to Benin, a technology that will serve as a catalyst for progress in countless aspects of life and business […] With 5G, we are laying the foundation for innovation, economic growth, and opportunities that strengthen individuals and communities,” said Uche Ofodile, Managing Director of MTN Benin.

While details about MTN’s network vendor partners were not disclosed, the company emphasized that 5G will play a crucial role in enhancing services such as gaming, streaming, and the Internet of Things (IoT). This launch is part of a broader effort by MTN Benin to modernize its infrastructure, which includes a $215 million, three-year investment plan announced earlier this year. The plan aims to expand the network and support the rollout of 5G across the country.

MTN is the leading carrier in Benin, holding a 50 percent market share and serving 8.4 million mobile customers. Additionally, in July, Canadian infrastructure firm NuRAN Wireless announced plans to deploy 200 sites for MTN in rural parts of Benin, providing coverage for 2G, 3G, and 4G networks.
