Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service, has officially launched in Liberia, marking its first expansion into Africa in 2025. This milestone follows a one-year licensing agreement with the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), aimed at improving high-speed internet access, particularly in remote and underserved areas.
LTA officials welcomed the arrival of Starlink, viewing it as a significant step in the country’s digital transformation. With Liberia’s mobile internet penetration currently at less than 30%, the agreement is expected to boost connectivity nationwide. LTA Acting Chairperson, Abdullah Kamara, expressed his optimism, noting that Starlink’s service could extend Liberia’s internet coverage to nearly 100%. He said, “This means that town halls, clinics, and schools all over Liberia will now have the opportunity to sign on to Starlink services.”
The Liberia Revenue Authority has received 50 Starlink satellite terminals, valued at USD 162,000, to improve connectivity across its offices. The service is expected to benefit key institutions, including hospitals, schools, and government offices.
Liberia joins 17 other African countries already using Starlink’s Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation, with the company planning further expansion across the continent in 2025.
