Openserve assumes chairmanship of South African Telecommunications Association.

Openserve, the wholesale infrastructure arm of Telkom Group, has officially assumed the Chairmanship of the Southern Africa Telecommunications Association (SATA) for the 2025–2026 term. This transition took place at the 45th SATA Annual Conference happening at the Sandton Convention Center from April 23 to 25, 2025.

In a statement, Serame Taukobong, Group CEO of Telkom, said: “I am especially proud that one of our key businesses, Openserve, will assume the Chairmanship of SATA for the 2025-2026 term. This responsibility is proof of our ongoing commitment to advancing Africa’s digital future with as a collective.”

Under Openserve’s chairmanship of the Southern Africa Telecommunications Association (SATA), the organization is set to prioritize the development of a seamless, borderless fiber network connecting all 14 SADC member countries. This initiative aims to enhance regional connectivity and promote digital integration across Southern Africa.

In addition, plans are underway to establish a Tier IV data center within the region. This facility is intended to bolster cloud adoption, support digital transformation efforts, and enhance sovereign data capabilities, positioning Southern Africa as a competitive player in the global digital economy.

The conference brought together ICT professionals, policymakers, and industry leaders from across the Southern African Development Community (SADC), focusing on broadband access, regional collaboration, and digital transformation. Key sessions included a high-level G20 panel featuring prominent figures such as Serame Taukobong of Telkom SA, Minister of Communications & Digital Technologies Hon. Solly Malatsi, and Nonkqubela Jordan-Dyani, Director-General of the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies.

The event also highlighted Openserve’s strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and digital infrastructure. These initiatives align with Telkom’s broader vision of fostering inclusive digital growth and positioning Southern Africa as a competitive player in the global digital economy.
