Teraco, Africa’s largest carrier-neutral data center operator, has completed construction of its latest hyperscale facility, JB5, in Johannesburg – adding critical new infrastructure as demand for digital services and cloud computing accelerates across the continent.
The new facility brings Teraco’s total installed capacity across its portfolio to 186 megawatts (MW), cementing its position as the largest data center operator on the continent. Located within the company’s sprawling Isando campus, JB5 adds 70MW of critical IT load capacity to the site and was constructed in a single phase with twelve 1,000-square-meter halls on a 55,000-square-meter footprint.
“JB5 is purpose-built to meet global hyperscale requirements while aligning with our long-term commitment to sustainability and operational excellence,” the company said in a statement.

The facility incorporates a closed-loop chilled water system with 100% free air cooling, eliminating ongoing water usage for cooling – a key environmental consideration in South Africa. Power is supplied via a 120MVA utility feed, ensuring the resilience and redundancy required by global cloud and content providers.
Teraco’s Isando campus is also home to NAPAfrica, one of Africa’s largest internet exchanges, serving as a strategic interconnection point for hundreds of carriers, internet service providers, content platforms, and enterprises. This positions JB5 – and Teraco more broadly – as a linchpin in Africa’s internet backbone. Teraco has also started construction of its 120MW utility-scale solar PV power plant in the Free State province of South Africa.
Backed by U.S.-based Digital Realty, Teraco has played a leading role in building the continent’s digital infrastructure, helping to support everything from cloud migration and financial inclusion to media streaming and AI workloads. The completion of JB5 comes amid a wave of global investment in African data centers, as companies seek to localize workloads and reduce latency for growing internet populations.
With its expanded capacity, Teraco is poised to play an even more critical role in powering Africa’s digital future.
