Cameroon’s state-owned operator CAMTEL has signed a three-year Master Service Agreement with Ethiopia’s Ethio Telecom, marking a major step in its digital transformation agenda. The deal, signed Thursday in Yaoundé after months of negotiations, gives CAMTEL access to the expertise of Africa’s oldest and one of its largest telecom operators.
CAMTEL’s Chief Executive Officer, Judith Yah Sunday, and Ethio Telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamiru formalized the partnership in the presence of senior government officials.
“This is an agreement that is going to last for three years. It is a three-year project,” Yah Sunday said. She noted Ethio Telecom’s scale and maturity: “They have more than 16,000 staff, 86 million customers, and 731 billion FCFA in revenue, and they have transformed their country digitally. Ethio Telecom is a model for us.”
Tamiru said her delegation came to Cameroon “because CAMTEL is embarking on a major milestone with its decision to go completely digital.” “As you know, Ethio Telecom is the first telecom operator in Africa. We have been serving our nation proudly for more than 131 years,” she said, adding that the operator has led Ethiopia’s recent digital transformation “because of the vast infrastructure that we have been building.”
She emphasized the focus on innovation and knowledge transfer: “We are here to share proven experience, especially digital solutions that can change the way we live and do business.”
“With our record in the African market, we will support CAMTEL to realise their vision to digitally empower Cameroon.”
Tamiru said the partnership aligns with continental goals under Africa’s Digital Strategy 2020–2030 and frames the collaboration as part of a shared mission:
“We are here to work for a digitally connected, empowered, and prosperous Africa.”
