Nigeria’s IXPN peaks at 2.1 Tbps in December, says Rudman

Nigeria’s Internet Exchange Point (IXPN) reached a peak of 2.1 terabits per second (Tbps) in local internet traffic in December, highlighting the country’s growing capacity to keep data flows within its borders.
The milestone was disclosed by Muhammed Rudman, Chief Executive Officer, IXPN, during his goodwill remarks at the National Information Technology Development Agency’s National Sovereign Cloud Initiative stakeholder workshop in Abuja.

Rudman said 50% to 70% of traffic generated by connected networks is now domesticated locally, reducing dependence on international transit. Growth has been driven in part by the expansion of IXPN’s Abuja exchange, which now connects more than 20 networks and hosts local caching infrastructure from global content providers, including Google and Netflix.
Traffic between Lagos and Abuja has scaled from hundreds of megabits to 16–20 gigabits per second, improving latency and resilience for operators and users.
The IXPN’s progress underscores how policy-backed collaboration between government and private operators can deliver tangible infrastructure outcomes, providing a practical foundation for Nigeria’s emerging sovereign cloud framework.
