Axian Telecom completes acquisition of Free Senegal

Axian Telecom has successfully completed its acquisition of additional shares in Senegalese telecoms operator Free, increasing its ownership from 40% to 80%. This strategic move aims to achieve two things: consolidate and strengthen Axian Telecom’s presence in West Africa, and boost Free’s position as a key player in the Senegalese telecom market. This move has been lauded by industry stakeholders as a significant step in transforming the country’s telecommunications landscape.

Free in Senegal provides fast and reliable 4G+ network access and fiber, enabling individuals and businesses to access quality, affordable connectivity and participate more effectively in the digital economy.

The completion of the deal coincides with Senegal’s plans to launch 5G technology, with the regulator having granted a provisional 5G license to Sonatel (Orange Senegal) in July 2023. Free Senegal is the second-largest mobile operator in Senegal, with approximately 5.2 million users, while Sonatel is the largest operator with around 12.3 million mobile users. Expresso Senegal and smaller operators, Promobile and Hayo Telecom, round out the mobile market in Senegal.
