Medallion completes rebrand to Digital Realty, opens new data center in Lagos

Medallion Data Centres Limited, Nigeria’s leading carrier-neutral data center operator, has announced it has completed its rebrand to Digital Realty and is now part of the Digital Realty group of companies. Digital Realty (NYSE: DLR) is the largest global provider of cloud- and carrier-neutral data centers, colocation and interconnection solutions.

On October 27, 2023, at an event in Lagos, Nigeria, Medallion will officially complete its rebrand as Digital Realty, completing a process that started in 2021 and marked Digital Realty’s first expansion into Africa, with a commitment to invest over $2 billion in Africa’s technology infrastructure over the next decade. Digital Realty recently acquired Teraco, South Africa’s leading carrier-neutral data center and interconnection services provider, and home of NAPAfrica, the largest internet exchange in Africa.

The company also announced the opening of its second data center in Lagos, LOS2. This state-of-the-art facility is set to commence services on October 24, 2023, and will provide customers with an additional one-megawatt IT capacity. LOS2 is situated on Medallion’s Victoria Island campus, and will be interconnected with the existing LOS1 data center, recognized as the most interconnected facility in the West African sub-region and a prominent peering point for the region. This location is ideal for subsea cable, metro fiber, mobile services, over-the-top providers, and the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN), facilitating efficient connections in a low-latency environment.

According to the statement on TechEconomy, more than 68% of the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN)’s traffic is exchanged at Medallion’s Lagos data center, underscoring its pivotal role in Nigeria’s connectivity ecosystem. LOS2 also offers access to the 2Africa subsea cable system through diverse fiber routes to Medallion’s LKK1 facility, enabling reliable, high-speed connections to the cable’s 46 locations across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

Medallion has been a key player in Nigeria’s digital economy for over a decade, offering carrier-neutral data center services in Lagos and Abuja. The company has established itself as a go-to provider for fast, efficient, and cost-effective data center and connectivity services.

Medallion and its Chief Executive Officer, Ikechukwu Nnamani have received several accolades for their contribution to Nigeria’s digital evolution.
