Equinix has reached a major milestone across its Internet Exchanges (IX) in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), surpassing a combined peak traffic throughput of 3 terabits per second (Tbps)—a landmark achievement that underscores the company’s growing strength in global interconnection.

“When people think of Equinix IX, flagship locations like Singapore, Dallas, or Ashburn often come to mind—not necessarily our IXPs in EMEA,” said Thomas Gould, Senior Manager for Business Development, Interconnection and Peering at Equinix. “And when it comes to Internet Exchanges in Europe, it’s typically the long-established regional IXPs that lead the conversation. That’s understandable.”

Gould emphasized that Equinix is not in a race to unseat the legacy IXPs that have long dominated the European market. “Our goal has never been to compete head-on with these respected European IXPs, but to complement and partner with them. We’re committed to supporting the growth and diversity of Europe’s interconnection ecosystems while also offering a robust IX platform of our own,” he said.

Despite only launching many of its EMEA IXPs in 2018, Equinix has seen dramatic growth. “Some had early growing pains, but others have flourished—especially in the last few years,” Gould noted. “Traffic in our Milan exchange has doubled in just six months, while London and Frankfurt have become increasingly prominent IX hubs in their own right.”

Momentum has also come from strategic acquisitions. The company’s Warsaw exchange—formerly PLIX—reached a 2024 peak of 1.9 Tbps, and its Paris exchange—formerly Telecity—hit a 556 Gbps peak. Warsaw, in particular, has emerged as a key bridge between Eastern and Western Europe.

“Equinix Warsaw is the most densely connected data center in Poland, hosting a rich mix of Tier 1 and regional carriers, ISPs, and cloud on-ramps,” Gould said. “With direct metro and long-haul fiber routes, it enables low-latency connectivity across Central and Eastern Europe.”

He credited the achievement to the combined efforts of Equinix’s customers, partners, and teams. “Surpassing 3 Tbps of peak traffic across EMEA is a massive achievement, reflecting the growing strength of our interconnection platform in the region,” he said. “Whether it’s reducing latency, improving resilience, or enabling access to a more open, diverse peering fabric, the Equinix IX, together with our partners—remains a vital part of how the internet operates in EMEA.”
