Moroccan telecommunications operator, inwi has entered into a strategic partnership with Medusa Submarine Cable System to enhance its trans-Mediterranean connectivity.
As reported by Capacity Media, inwi will collaborate with Medusa to deploy and manage dedicated fiber optic links along the expansive Medusa subsea cable, stretching over 8,000km from the Atlantic Ocean through the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea.
This new route from Asia to the Atlantic will meet the growing demand for increased capacity driven by fixed and internet traffic, providing diverse and secure connectivity paths for inwi’s customers.
The partnership with Medusa reinforces inwi’s commitment to providing innovative and secure solutions for its customers while contributing to the development of Morocco’s digital ecosystem as part of the national strategy for digital transformation and sovereignty, aiming to position Morocco as a major technological hub in Africa.
As of the beginning of 2023, Morocco boasted 33.18 million internet users, with internet penetration reaching 88.1 percent, as per the Digital 2023 Morocco report. Despite this, a prevalent digital divide persists in the country, with access to high-speed broadband predominantly concentrated in urban areas, leaving rural communities underserved.
The Medusa Submarine Cable is believed to be the longest of its kind in the Mediterranean, and will link the two shores in Europe and Morocco, and will have 16 landing points in countries, including Morocco.
Telecommunication company Orange Maroc, had last year, announced its investment in the cable “We are particularly proud to contribute to the trans-Mediterranean digital connectivity by deploying the landing and submarine cable infrastructure in the Nador region, which will connect Morocco to the North African and Southern European countries involved in this project,” CEO of Orange Morocco, Hendrik Kasteel said.
