Vertiv launches SmartCabinet ID for enhanced edge computing

To address the increasing demand for edge computing solutions, Vertiv, a provider of critical digital infrastructure and continuity solutions, has launched the Vertiv SmartCabinet ID, an all-in-one, fully sealed single-rack enclosure that delivers cooling, power, and environmental protection for applications at the network edge. This solution addresses significant challenges related to heat, humidity, air quality, and physical security for edge compute users.

The SmartCabinet ID will be available in North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), offering multiple rack sizes and cooling capacity options. The options include 24U and 42U racks and 3.5 kW and 7.0 kW of cooling capacity. This product is aimed at ensuring the reliable operation of IT equipment under the challenging conditions encountered in warehouses, factory floors, and other common edge locations.

Designed to be dust, dirt, and water-resistant, the sealed enclosure provides optimum protection to the IT equipment, including protection from indoor sprinkler system activation. The SmartCabinet ID also features integrated emergency fans as a backup option in case of a power outage or failure of the primary cooling module. It is further equipped with a built-in touchscreen display with communication capabilities, enabling both local and remote monitoring and control of key components. Alarms and notifications instantly warn the user of any ambient conditions that are out of specification.

While ensuring protection and operational efficiency, the SmartCabinet ID is engineered for space maximization – a key challenge in edge networks. The integrated cooling solution and the power management block utilize zero U-space in the rack, leaving ample space for servers and other IT equipment.

“Edge compute sites such as those found in industrial, logistic, and commercial environments directly enable business-critical applications, but the IT organizations responsible for their performance can be challenged to maintain the service levels commonly delivered within traditional data center facilities,” said Alex Pope, Vice President of Global Edge Systems at Vertiv. “The SmartCabinet™️ ID was designed specifically to address the physical security risks and demanding environments of many edge sites, in addition to power and cooling at the capacities needed in these spaces,” he noted.

The Vertiv SmartCabinet ID can be viewed virtually via the Vertiv XR app, an augmented reality tool that enables users to visualize the solution in their space and explore its features and details from multiple angles. Regarding services and support, Vertiv provides a full suite of options for the SmartCabinet ID, including installation and startup, preventative maintenance contracts, and extended warranties, ensuring seamless deployments and peace of mind for IT teams operating in challenging conditions.
