Nigeria will host the 15th edition of the African Peering & Interconnection Forum (AfPIF) from August 19 – 21 in Lagos, underscoring the country’s growing role as a hub for Africa’s digital economy.

More than 500 leaders from the global internet industry will convene to assess Africa’s internet ecosystem and explore strategies to expand infrastructure, strengthen interconnection, and scale content hosting. The aim: reduce costs, improve performance, and advance Africa’s digital sovereignty in an era of rapid connectivity demand.

Participants will include internet exchange points (IXPs), data centers, content delivery networks, cloud providers, submarine cable operators, ISPs, government officials, researchers, development agencies, academia, and hardware vendors. The three-day programme at the Lagos Continental Hotel will feature workshops, keynotes, bilateral meetings, panel sessions, lightning talks, and networking events.

Organised by the African IXP Association (AFIX) with support from the Internet Society (ISOC), and hosted locally by the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN), Rack Centre, and AF-CIX, AfPIF has become the continent’s premier interconnection event.

“For over 15 years, AfPIF has united the African internet community to advance local network interconnection and traffic exchange across the continent,” said Kyle Spencer, Executive Director of the African IXP Association. “This has spurred investment in data centres, content hosting, and cross-border infrastructure – reducing costs, boosting performance, and broadening access while strengthening Africa’s economic independence and digital sovereignty. We look forward to continuing this work in Lagos.”

“This year marks a significant milestone for Africa’s peering and interconnection community,” said Michuki Mwangi, Distinguished Technologist for Internet Growth at the Internet Society. “It is the first time AfPIF is taking place in Africa’s most influential country, Nigeria, and under the new leadership of the African IXP Association. There is no better place to reimagine the future of interconnection. Lagos provides a platform to unlock cross-border infrastructure and traffic exchange across West Africa, while addressing east-to-west terrestrial gaps that can improve the region’s resilience.”

On behalf of the local hosts, Muhammed Rudman, CEO of IXPN, emphasized Nigeria’s readiness: “We look forward to welcoming stakeholders from across the peering and interconnection ecosystem to Lagos. Together, we can create a dynamic environment that fosters collaboration among African countries, strengthens our internet ecosystem, and enhances access for underserved and unserved communities.”
